About Ali Fruits & Vegetables Cold Storage
The project envisages setting up a plant for the preservation of table and seed potatoes, onions, carrots, eggs, sweets, betelnuts, yogurts, all types of pulps, medicines and varieties of fruits & vegetables. At 100% efficiency the project preserves 10,020 MT (200,400 bags @ 50 KG per bag).
Special Characteristics of the Project
Different kinds of fruits are preserved along with potato. Ammonia gas is used for potatoes and freon gas for fruits.
The cold storage has 9 separate chambers with different temperatures and different compressors.
The project has a geographical advantage: within 35 KM there is no other cold storage, and a huge amount of potato is cultivated in this area. Import produce from India through Burimari land port can also be preserved here.
A grading machine sorts potatoes into four categories — table, seed, French fry and chips potato. Pran, RFL group, and Indian UPL have already expressed verbal interest in hiring space.
Uses Screw Compressors (more powerful than piston compressors used in most cold storage), PIR panels for walls (updated technology instead of cork and bricks), and a solar Net Metering system connected to the national grid.
The condenser uses rainwater collected from the rooftop — not underground water. Boundary walls use hollow blocks for ecological balance. The gate is architectured by artists as self-advertising.
Rooms can be reconfigured for plus or minus temperature, thanks to PIR-panel construction.
Location of the Project
Located at Village Dakhin Musrot Modati, Union Modati, Post Office Chowdhurirhat (Code 5520), Upazila Kaligonj, District Lalmonirhat. Adjacent to the Dhaka–Burimari Highway. Well-communicated, disaster-free, environmentally friendly, and rich in raw material availability.
Experience of the Owner
Mr. Yer Ali, the Proprietor, has been working for the last 20 years in the agriculture sector through Lalmoni Agro Ltd. — spanning feed production, dairy, poultry, goat and fish farms, and seasonal-crops stock business. He has also engaged in construction, real estate and the Alibaba Theme Park.
He achieved a Masters of Business Studies from Rajshahi University (Finance and Banking). He then joined First Lease International Ltd. (now First Finance Ltd., established in 1994) and left after 15 years as Executive Vice President (EVP) to establish himself as an entrepreneur.
Marketing & Demand
Cold storages play a key role in reducing wastage of perishable commodities, providing lucrative prices to farmers and making produce affordable to consumers. Demand is rising with changes in lifestyle and consumer preference for packaged and processed food.
Field research shows that about 25% of total production of potatoes, onion, carrot, chillies and fruit is consumed during production period, 15% is preserved by farmers' traditional means, and the remaining 60% requires preservation.
Technology & Equipment
The preservation technology is fully automated and temperature-controlled from one main switch. Seed and table potatoes are sorted by grading machine, packed in Net Bags, pre-cooled and stored in temperature/humidity-controlled rooms.
Imported machinery (cooling compressors, oil separator, condenser, motors) totals BDT 10.39 Crore. Installation cost BDT 0.85 Crore, supervised by foreign and local erectors.
A 540 KVA solar system is being installed. CFR price approx. USD 273,980 (@ Tk 95 per USD) — equivalent to Tk 2.59 Crore.
